Behind the song
The story behind it.
“He Wants to Eat at Applebee’s” was inspired by the kind of ridiculous mismatch that can happen when two people are technically sharing the same evening but are living in completely different scenes. She has canceled plans, bought the lace, dimmed the lights, and made her intentions impossible to misunderstand. He is equally focused—just on the latest dinner deal. The humor comes from treating both desires with total seriousness. Her frustration keeps escalating as every flirtation is answered with another menu item, closing time, or carefully researched meal plan. Applebee’s becomes the absurd third party in the relationship: not glamorous, mysterious, or even especially threatening, yet somehow unbeatable when riblets and sweet tea are involved. Underneath the innuendo, the song is a playful tribute to those moments when romance collides with ordinary appetite. It does not need a villain or a dramatic betrayal—only one woman asking for his attention and one man sincerely dreaming about the neighborhood eatery. Sometimes the coldest romantic reality is simply realizing you are competing with boneless wings.
