Behind the song

The story behind it.

“Paper Crown King” was inspired by the moment someone finally recognizes that the power a controlling partner seemed to hold was never as solid as it appeared. His authority was built from blame, guilt, attention, and her willingness to keep making herself smaller. The paper crown becomes a symbol of that illusion: impressive only while she continues to treat it as real. The verses reflect the subtle ways emotional control can disguise itself as love. He calls possession affection, turns reasonable questions into arguments about her tone, and demands loyalty while offering none in return. Because the manipulation rarely announces itself openly, the narrator keeps interpreting every warning sign as a failure of her own. She stays incomplete so he never has to feel inadequate. The song’s turning point is not revenge or a dramatic final battle. The narrator refuses even to make him the villain of her story, because doing so would allow him to keep occupying its center. Instead, she withdraws the attention that sustained his imaginary kingdom and closes the door. “Paper Crown King” is ultimately about reclaiming authority over your own life—and realizing that some people stop ruling you the instant you stop kneeling.

Lyrics

Paper Crown King

That half-smile you wore when you were telling a lie
You said I was your anchor while you drifted by
Every warning sign, I called it my fault
You called it affection, but it was control
You said the right words, pretended to care
While I laid my whole heart out bare
I thought I was chosen
Turns out I was convenient
You never fell in love
You just took what was given
You wear a paper crown
I worshipped you like a king
You demand loyalty like royalty
While you take everything
You fed on my time
It was never enough
I see you clearly now
Paper crown king
Paper crown king
You said I was selfish when asking for space
Said I was dramatic for questioning my place
You turned every question back on my tone
Made me feel guilty for wanting to be alone
I stayed incomplete so you would not fail
You called it balance, with your thumb on the scale
You live on attention
Yet called me the whore
I kept shrinking myself
You always wanted more
You wear a paper crown
I worshipped you like a king
You demand loyalty like royalty
While you take everything
You fed on my time
It was never enough
I see you clearly now
Paper crown king
Paper crown king
I don't need you as a villain
That gives you too much sway

No last fight, no final round
Just me walking away
You wear a paper crown
I worshipped you like a king
You demand loyalty like royalty
While you take everything
You fed on my time
It was never enough
I see you clearly now
Paper crown king
Paper crown king
You owe me nothing
I don't want a goodbye
I'm closing the door
You don't rule me anymore
Paper crown king
Paper crown king
