Behind the song

The story behind it.

“You Don’t Walk On Water” was inspired by the moment a supposedly casual comment reveals a deeper intention. The narrator initially accepts his explanation that the idea of another woman—or an open relationship—was only a joke. But when he says the name, watches her reaction, and then tells her she misunderstood, she realizes he is not speaking carelessly. He is testing the boundary to see how much she will tolerate. The deeper betrayal is not only that he wants someone else. It is that he believes her devotion guarantees she will remain available while he asks for more. She had made him “the one,” placed him on a throne, and loved him as though he could not fall. He mistakes that generosity for proof of his own importance and assumes the person who made him feel adored will continue doing so regardless of what he chooses. The bridge reverses that illusion: “You never walked on water / I just made you float.” His elevated status came from the way she saw and supported him, not from anything supernatural about him. Once she stops seeing him as holy, the power disappears with the pedestal. “You Don’t Walk On Water” is ultimately about withdrawing devotion from someone who treated it as an entitlement—and recognizing that by the time she physically leaves, she has already been emotionally gone for a long time.

Lyrics

You Don’t Walk on Water

[Verse 1]
You said it like a question
Like it was just a phase
I laughed and said you’re crazy
Thought it would fade away
You said you didn’t mean it
Just something off your head
I chose to just believe you
And left it there, unsaid
[Pre-Chorus]
Then you dropped her name
Said it was a joke
Watched my face go silent
Something in me broke
You said I took it wrong
Said I should calm down
But you were seeing what I’d allow
[Chorus]
I see it in your eyes
I hear it in your sighs
You close your eyes too long
She’s living in your mind
You’re holding onto me
But holding her inside
You wanted open love
And this is what you chose
Live with what you chose
[Verse 2]
I thought you were my one
I never saw you small
I put you on a throne
Like you would never fall
You liked the way I loved you
You liked the way I chose
But you mistook devotion
For something you could own

[Pre-Chorus 2]
You didn’t want to lose me
You just wanted more
You liked the way I made you
Feel wanted, feel adored
You said it was a joke
But now I see it clear
You weren’t scared of losing me
You thought I’d still be here
[Chorus]
I see it in your eyes
I hear it in your sighs
You close your eyes too long
She’s living in your mind
You’re holding onto me
But holding her inside
You wanted open love
And this is what you chose
Live with what you chose
[Bridge]
You think they’d line up
If I let you go
You forgot how quiet
Your phone was before
You never walked on water
I just made you float
I stopped seeing you holy
The moment you showed
[Chorus]
I see it in your eyes
I hear it in your sighs
You close your eyes too long
She’s living in your mind
You’re holding onto me
But holding her inside
You wanted open love
And this is what you chose
Live with what you chose
[outro]
I’ve been gone so long
So long
So long
I’m gone
