Behind the song

The story behind it.

“Cheap Seats” was inspired by the experience of standing beside someone who seems effortlessly confident and suddenly becoming aware of every perceived flaw in yourself. The narrator enters the relationship trying to be seen, but the more she compares herself to the person in front of her, the smaller she becomes. She rehearses, edits, and softens herself until disappearing begins to feel safer than being rejected. The title comes from the realization that she has become a spectator in her own life. She has been sitting in the cheap seats—watching someone else move forward while she waits to be noticed, and watching an imagined, more acceptable version of herself take the life she wants. The mirrors in the song represent both honest self-reflection and the exhausting attempt to repair an image that was never truly broken. What begins as insecurity gradually becomes resistance. The narrator stops asking whether she can fit into someone else’s expectations and starts asking where she can exist without apology. The ending does not promise that belonging will arrive immediately; it offers something more important—the decision to stop begging for recognition and to seek the places where she is already enough. “Cheap Seats” is ultimately about leaving the audience, reclaiming the stage, and refusing to disappear for love.

Lyrics

Cheap Seats

[Verse 1]
You walked in like you already knew
Every shadow had room for you
I tripped over words I rehearsed all night
Played it cool, played it wrong, played it shy
You don’t even try, it just works
I feel every flaw when you breathe
You glow like you’re untouched by doubt
I’m learning how to disappear quietly
[Pre-Chorus]
I keep fixing mirrors that don’t lie back
Trying to love what they reflect
I smile like I’m fine with the gap
Between who I am and who you expect
[Chorus]
I’m not broken, just bent too far
Still standing under the same stars
If I don’t fit where you are
I’ll belong somewhere else, someday
I don’t need to be perfect to stay
But tonight I feel out of place
[Verse 2]
I wanted you to see me leave
Notice the silence when I breathe
But you’re already three steps ahead
I’m still unpacking things I never said
I don’t want control, I want truth
Even if it cuts me loose
I chase a version of myself
That doesn’t apologize for existing
[Pre-Chorus]
I’ve been shrinking just to survive
Calling it grace, calling it time
But I’m tired of standing aside
Watching my life from the cheap seats
[Chorus]
I’m not broken, just bent too far
Still standing under the same stars
If I don’t fit where you are
I’ll belong somewhere else, someday
I don’t need to be perfect to stay
But tonight I feel out of place
[Bridge]
If you run, I won’t follow this time
I’ve done enough disappearing for you
If I’m strange, let me be alive
I’m done asking permission to feel
[Outro]
I don’t belong where I beg to be seen
I belong where I’m already me
